A Study on Carotid Blood Flow of Korean Normal Adults by Color Doppler Sonography

Abstract
Color Doppler sonography was applied to the carotid arteries to provide normal data for clinical application. The carotid arteries were studied in 50 healthy volunteers with 7.0 MHz linear transducer of a computed sonography system.
The carotic arteries were depicted clearly in the color Doppler mode. Pulsed Doppler signals could be recorded in all the cases.
The following normal values were provided for al vessels: systolic peak, end-diastolic maximum, mean SD values were 118.7¡¾21.9, 34.7¡¾9.9cm/sec for time-averaged maximum velocity and 83.7¡¾15.6, 30.5¡¾8.2cm/sec for time-averaged maximum
velocity,
and
91.5¡¾16.5, 20.4¡¾7.6cm/sec time-averaged maximum velocity in the common, internal and external carotid arteries, respectively.
Color Doppler sonography of the carotid arteries is a new, noninvasive, bedside investigative method.
We think that it will be a new diagnostic examination in disorders of the carotic arteries.
